Internet of things

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to an integrated system of physical objects ( from ordinary household objects to sophisticated industrial tools) embedded with sensors, software, and other technologies for the purpose of connecting and exchanging data within the systems over the “internet”.

  • Applications –  To create smart infrastructure in various verticals such as Power, Automotive, Safety & Surveillance, Remote Health Management, Agriculture, Smart Homes and Smart Cities etc
  • Challenges – Security and privacy risks, Interoperability issues, regulatory and legal issues, digital divide,
  • Example – Smart City Mission of India is based on the ideas of energy efficiency, smart waste disposal, and smart traffic regulation, all these aspects are enabled by IoT.

 The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of interconnected devices equipped with sensors and software, allowing them to collect and exchange data over the internet, enabling remote monitoring, control, and automation.

Automation of Tasks:  

  • Smart home devices automate tasks like controlling lights, fans, thermostats, and security systems
  • Automated inventory management systems track stock levels and reorder supplies when inventory runs low.

Increased Efficiency: 

  • Industrial Revolution 4.0 : Smart factories → Industrial IoT systems optimize production processes, reducing downtime and minimizing resource wastage.
  • IoT-enabled Precision agriculture systems automate irrigation and fertilization, improving crop yields and reducing manual labor.

Remote Monitoring:

  • Wearable health trackers allow remote monitoring of vital signs, enabling early intervention in case of health issues.

Improved Decision-Making:

  • Smart city initiatives use traffic flow data to optimize transportation routes and reduce congestion

Security and Privacy Risks: Vulnerabilities in IoT devices may lead to unauthorized access to personal data or cyberattacks on critical infrastructure systems.

  • The Mirai botnet, discovered in 2016, exploited poorly secured IoT devices to launch massive Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks.

State-sponsored cyber-espionage targets Industrial IoT (IIoT) devices in critical infrastructure 

  • eg. Stuxnet : target was uranium enrichment plant in iran

Users’ lack of IoT security awareness: 

  • hackers exploit this vulnerability for social engineering attacks. 

Data Overload: making it challenging to extract meaningful insights.

  • Example: Sensor data from smart grids producing terabytes of data daily, requiring advanced analytics for actionable insights.

Interoperability Issues: 

  • Lack of standardization and compatibility among IoT devices from different manufacturers.

In 2022, in order to secure Consumer Internet of Things (IoT) devices, the Department of Telecommunications has released a report “Code of Practice for Securing Consumer Internet of Things(IoT)”.
