  • SC ends impunity for armed forces in disturbed areas
    • Till now, security personnel enjoyed immunity under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act of 1958 (AFSPA) against criminal action for acts committed in disturbed areas.
    • In disturbed areas army could kill on basis of internal information etc. no need for justification.
    • But yesterday, Supreme Court said “Every death caused by the armed forces in a disturbed area, whether the victim is a dreaded criminal or a militant or a terrorist or an insurgent, should be thoroughly enquired into”.
    • Importance: Civil (Article 21) & Human Rights get acknowledged in sensitive areas under military control.
    • AFSPA applied states:
    • North-East: Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland and Meghalaya.
    • Jammu & Kashmir: (J& K AFSPA act)
  • Fat Tax
    • Kerala applied ‘fat tax’ on food articles of conspicuous consumption (high end restaurant food) such as pizzas and burghers sold through branded restaurants.
    • Tax: 14.5%
  • Govt. to acquire 1.05 lakh acres for Bandar port and industrial corridor
    • Bander Port – Machlipatnam Port (Andhra Pradesh)
  • Monsoon picks up, sowing of pulses gets boost
    • Kharif Pulses: Tur(Pigeon Peas), Arhar(Split red gram), Urad(Split Black gram), Moong (Split Green gram)
  • India and Mozambique signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoU)
    • Signed Agreements :
    • MoU on Long-term agreement for purchase of pulses.
    • MoU on cooperation in the field of youth affairs and sports.
    • MoU on reduction of drug trafficking and psychotropic substances and related materials.
  • India and South Africa have signed Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) four areas.
    • Signed agreements:
    • MoU on Tourism.
    • MOU on Information and Communication technology (ICT).
    • MoU on Grass root innovation (Science and Technology)
    • MOU on Cooperation in Arts and Culture.
  • BRICS drug control meeting begins in New Delhi:
    • Why: Result of ‘eThekwani Declaration’ adopted during the BRICS summit in March 2013 at Durban, South Africa.
    • Organized by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) of India.
  • India- Nigeria: India sets up apparel training centre in Kaduna, Nigeria
  • Vedanta Resources will invest a total of $1 billion (about Rs. 6,600 crore) in its Gamsberg mine project in South Africa, which is one of the world’s largest undeveloped zinc deposits.
    • India:Largest-Zinc mine: Rampura- Agucha (Bhilwara, Rajasthan) :  Also operated by Vedanta
