Origin of the Rajputs

Origin of the Rajputs refers to the historical emergence of the Rajput clans in northern and western India during the early medieval period. This topic examines various theories such as Agnikula, foreign origin, and mixed origin—that explain their rise as a dominant warrior class. The study of the Origin of the Rajputs is an important part of Rajasthan Polity, as it helps in understanding the political and social foundations of the region.

Rise of the Rajput Age

  • After the death of Harshavardhana, the political unity of India came to an end.
  • In the absence of a central power, India was divided into numerous small states.
  • Despite being ruled by different dynasties, they were collectively called ‘Rajputs’.
