In India, coal is found mainly in rock sequences of two geological periods – Gondwana and Tertiary deposits. The coal found in these rock sequences is mainly Bituminous type.

Gondwana Coal –

  • The most important Gondwana coal field in India is located in the Damodar Valley. Jharia, Raniganj are among the big coal fields here. Other river basins associated with coal are Godavari, Mahanadi and Son.

Coal Mines – 

  • Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh, Korba in Chhattisgarh, Talcher and Rampur in Odisha; Chanda-Wardha, Kamptee and Bander in Maharashtra, Singareni in Telangana and Pandur in Andhra Pradesh.

Tertiary Coal – 

  • Found in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Nagaland. These are Darangiri, Cherrapunji, Mevlong and Langrin (Meghalaya); It is extracted in Makum, Jaipur and Nazira in Upper Assam, Namchik-Namphuk (Arunachal Pradesh) and Kalakot (Jammu and Kashmir).

Apart from this, brown coal or lignite is also found.
