Food management is the integrated process of procurement, distribution, and maintaining buffer stock of food grains. Hence, it involves 3 components –

Basis of food security –
- Providing highly subsidized food grains at ₹1/2/3 per kg for coarse grains/ wheat/rice, respectively, to 50% of the urban population and 75% of the rural population
- 35 kg per family per month to households covered under Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY)
- In a recent decision, the government has decided to provide free foodgrains to about 81.35 crore beneficiaries under the NFSA for one year from January 1, 2023.
- PM Gareeb Kalyan Yojana –
- To provide free foodgrains to more than 80 crore beneficiaries
- 5 kg of additional food grains per person per month has been/is being provided free of cost to NFSA beneficiaries
- Buffer stocks are released at the time of food inflation
- Fortification is also done to ensure nutritional security
