Human values are guiding Principles, Ideologies and beliefs which core to a human being. 

Changing social system and effect – 

Positive effect – 

  1. Increasing acceptance and tolerance – Values like secularism, and empathy are more seen in the modern world than in the medieval or ancient world.
    1. Ex – Inclusion of secularism in Indian constitution [42nd constitutional amendment act] 
    2. Ex – Urbanization has reduced caste-based discrimination 
  2. Order-based social system – Strong rules and regulations, Laws, and institutions promote values like peace, Nonviolence, humanity, etc. Ex – Universal Declaration of Human Rights by UN 
  3. More freedom – The Value of freedom is given the highest priority in the new social system. Freedom to choose a life partner (A 21 – A Fundamental right declared under the Shafin Jahan case)
  4. Intervention of technology in society – Values like the Democratisation of information, Entrepreneurship, and Social capital are promoted by social media.
  5. Increasing role of civil society – Values like the right to information (MKSS), Environmental ethics (Chipko Aandolan), etc 

Negative effect – 

  1. Erosion of Traditional Values – Family values like care ethics are in decline
    1. Ex – Increasing old age homes
    2. Ex – Spiritual values imparted by grandparents are in decline due to the nuclear family system  
  2. Incidents of religious intolerance – The increasing role of politics in religion. Ex – Mob lynching based on religious sentiments [Pahlu Khan lynching, Palghar Sadhu lynching] 
  3. The negative impact of technology on society – Validation-Seeking Behavior (Likes, Dislikes)  – Inferiority complex, Invasion of Privacy, etc.

Late A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the 14th president of indian republic was known as people’s president. His moral personality had a great impact of his parents and teachers.
