Concept of UNESCO Geo-parks and Geo-heritage sites: Potential in Rajasthan

Draft The Geo-heritage Sites and Geo-relics Bill defines Geoheritage sites as places containing important geological geo-relics and features such as stratigraphic type sections, geological structures, and unique landforms including caves and natural rock-sculptures of national and international significance..

The Geo-heritage Sites encompass significant elements which possess educational, scientific, aesthetic and cultural value.

Four Geo heritage sites in Rajasthan are-

It is a terrestrial Meteorite Impact Crater. 

Location: Ramgarh Village, Mangrol Tehsil, Baran district, Rajasthan 

Formation : a circular depression of diameter of 3.5 km, was formed around 165 million years ago due to Meteor impact.

  • Composition:
    • The impact of the meteorite melted the sand in the area, forming glass.
    • Higher-than-normal amounts of iron, nickel, and cobalt have been found within the crater
  • Recognition and Heritage Status:
    • Recognized as the 200th crater of the World Geo-Heritage.
    • Declared India’s first National Geo Heritage site by the Rajasthan Government.
    • Designated as Ramgarh Conservation Reserve under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
  • Cultural Significance:
    • Features a 10th-century Shiva temple known as ‘Mini Khajuraho’ on its periphery.
    • The Pushkar Talab complex within the crater is a source of saline and alkaline water.
