17th Lok Sabha Elections 2019: Key Stats & Analysis

The final results 17th Lok Sabha Elections 2019 for 542 constituencies have been declared.  Elections to one constituency – Vellore in Tamil Nadu, were postponed.  BJP with 303 seats has retained its position as the single largest party.  In this post, we analyse the profile of the newly elected Members of Parliament of the 17th Lok Sabha.

Key Stats & Highlights of 17th Lok Sabha:

  • National Parties: 397 MPs were elected from national parties.  Of these 303 MPs were from BJP, 52 from Congress, and 22 from TMC.
  • State Parties: DMK (23) and YSRCP (22) won the most seats.
  • 300 MPs will be in Lok Sabha for their first –term. 197 MPs were part of 16th Lok Sabha and have been re-elected, while 45 were members of earlier Lok Sabhas.

Age-wise Composition:

  • The 17th Lok Sabha has 12% of MPs below the age 40 years.
  • On average, women MPs are 6 years younger compared to male MPs.

  • 394 MPs have Graduate or above level education.
  • 27% of MPs have studied only till 12th class.

Women Members of 17th Lok Sabha

  • 716 women candidates contested the General Election 2019.  Out of which, 78 women members have been elected to the 17th Lok Sabha.  In comparison in 2014, 62 women MPs were elected.
  • This increases their percentage from 11.3% in 2014 to 14.4% in 2019.
  • Though the percentage of women MPs has increased over the years, it is still lower in comparison to some countries. These include  Rwanda (61%), South Africa (43%), UK (32%), USA (24%), Bangladesh (21%).

  • 39% of MPs have listed their occupation as political and social work.
  • 38% are engaged in agricultural activities.
  • 23% MPs are businessmen.
  •  4% of MPs are lawyers.

Criminal Background & Cases Pending

  • Out of the 539 Winners analysed by ADR in Lok Sabha 2019, 233 (43%) Winners have declared criminal cases against themselves. There is continuous increase from 162 (30%) in 2009 and 185 (34%) in 2014.
  • 159 (29%) Winners in Lok Sabha 2019 Elections have declared serious criminal cases including cases related to rape, murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, crimes against women etc.
