The Nathdwara style is the second important phase of the Mewar school.

  • Main Center: The famous Pitha (shrine) of the Pushti Marg sect in Nathdwara.
  • Fusion Style: Combines elements of the Udaipur and Braj schools.
  • Pichwai Paintings: A major contribution, these are large cloth paintings hung behind the idol of Srinathji for decoration.
  • Themes: Depicts legends of Krishna, including characters like Yashoda, Nand, childhood friends, Gopis, and saints of the Vallabh Sect.
  • Color Palette: Predominantly uses green and yellow.
  • Common Features:
    • Image of Shrinathji at the center
    • Cows moving around
    • Deities looking down from heaven
    • Dense vegetation in the background
    • Predominance of banana trees
    • Prominent Painters: Baba Ramchandra, Narayan, Chaturbhuj, Ramlinga, Champalal, Ghasiram, Tulsiram.
    • Notable Women Painters: Kamala and Ilaichi.
  • Started during the reign of Rao Surjan. Later, Shatrusal constructed Rang Mahal. 
  • Golden Period: during the reign of Ummed Singh. He constructed Chitrshala, a gallery of murals called the ‘Heaven of Murals.’
  • Features → 
    • Initially, it had the impact of the Mewar school; later, Mughal as well as European styles also influenced it. By the end of the 19th century, it started declining
    • Prominent painters → Dalu, Ramlal, Sadhuram, Raghunath    (Trick → DRS lelo)
    • Use of Green and Blue colour 
    • Important Paintings and themes : 
      • Raag Ragini, Barahmasa, Procession of rulers ;water ponds; Birds and animals
      • Krishna leela events like upholding govardhan mountain 
      • Animal Hunting : Rao ummed singh is shown hunting wild boar.
