Unemployment & Schemes for augmenting the employability of labour

Sol – 

Unemployment Rate (UR) – 

  • Is the percentage of the labor force actively seeking employment but unable to find work? 
  • It’s calculated by dividing the number of unemployed individuals by the total labor force and multiplying by 100.

Labour force participation rate – 

  • The percentage of the working-age population that is either employed or actively seeking employment

Note – 

  • Unemployment Rate (UR) Declined from 6% (2017-18) to 3.2% (2023-24)
  • FLFPR (Female) rose from 23.3% (2017-18) to 41.7% (2023-24)

Sol – 

The National Career Service Project was launched in July 2015 to bridge the gap between job seekers and employers. 

A holistic employment ecosystem – 

  1. Comprehensive Registration:
    • Job Seekers: 2.8 crore job seekers have registered on the NCS portal.
    • Employers: 6.8 lakh employers have registered
  2. Job Fairs: Over 9,000 job fairs have been organized, providing direct interaction opportunities between employers and job seekers.
  3. Skill Development and Training: In partnership with the private sector, NCS offers a free, self-paced online/offline training program
    • includes soft and digital skills, as well as advanced computing areas
  4. Collaborations with Educational and Technical Institutions: NCS works closely with the Ministry of Education, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and All India Survey of Higher Education (AISHE) to extend its benefits to students and candidates.
  5. Integration with Key Government Portals:
    • EPFO and ESIC: Online integration allows employers to shortlist candidates from a nationwide database.
    • DigiLocker enables candidates to upload and share documents/certificates with employers, speeding up the hiring process.
    • eShram, Udyam, and Skill India: Integration facilitates job search and matching, with more than 10 lakh candidates from e-Shram and 46 lakh skilled candidates from Skill India registered on NCS.
  6. International Job Module: This module allows employers registered with the Ministry of External Affairs to post international job opportunities
