Classical Music

Classical Music is an important component of Rajasthan Art & Culture, reflecting the rich musical heritage and refined traditions of the region. It is based on well-defined principles of ragas, talas, and classical compositions, developed through centuries of cultural evolution. In Rajasthan, classical music traditions have been preserved and promoted by royal patronage, temples, and renowned musicians.

Classical Music which is a disciplined form of practice based on scriptures, raga, and tala, and has evolved through the Guru–Shishya (teacher–disciple) tradition. In Rajasthan, its development took place under the patronage of royal courts, from where, through centres such as Jaipur, Tonk, and Mewar, the emergence of various musical gharanas became possible

DHRUPAD STYLE –

  • Founder – Man Singh Tomar, ruler of Gwalior
  • Court Musician – Baiju Bawra
  • Man Singh Tomar himself was a scholar and accomplished musician
  • The Dhrupad style of singing began with the collaboration of Baiju Bawra
  • Major Talas – Chautal, Matt, Brahma, Lakshmi, Sul, Teevra
  • Other MusicianSwami Haridas (Associated with the Atrauli Gharana)
  • The only Dhrupad female vocalist of the state – Madhu Bhatt Tailang
  • Four styles (vani) of dhrupad style
    • GOHAR VANI
      • Origin – Gwalior
      • Founder – Tansen
    • Dagar  Vani
      • Origin – Jaipur
      • Propagator – Brijnand Dagar
    • Khandar Vani
      • Origin – Uniara (Tonk)
      • Founder – Samokhan Singh, ruler of Khandar
    • Nauhar Vani
      • Origin – Jaipur
      • Founder – Shree chand Nohar

  • FounderBhupat Khan
  • Popular name of Bhupat Khan – Manrang
  • Chief ArtistMohammad Ali Khan
  • Mohammad Ali Khan was popularly known as “Kothiwale”
  • This gharana is primarily associated with the Khayal style of singing
  • Special Feature – Mastery over Jod Ragas
  • Other Famous Artists – Kesar Bai Kerkar, Nivrutti Buwa Sarnaik

GHARANA OF PATIYALA

  • Founders – Ali Bakhsh (Aaliya) and Fateh Ali (Fattu)
  • A sub-branch of the Jaipur Gharana; they received musical training in Jaipur, then moved to Tonk, and later to Patiala
  • Title conferred By the Nawab of Tonk:
    • Ali Bakhsh → General
    • Fateh Ali → Colonel
  • Prominent Artist – Ghulam Ali (Pakistani Ghazal singer)

ATRAULIGHARANA

  • Founders – Sahab Khan and Alladiya Khan
  • Practitioners of the Khandar Vani of Dhrupad
  • This gharana is a branch of the Jaipur Gharana
  • Main Artists –
    • Manataul Khan, popularly known as “the weeping fakir” (रुलाने वाले फकीर)
    • Swami Haridas
      • Notable Members of this Gharana –
      • Tansen and Baiju, who were disciples associated with this tradition
    • Kishori Amonkar

MEWATI GHRANA

  • Founder – Ghaghe Nazir Khan
  • Court singer of Jodhpur ruler Maharaja Jaswant Singh Ji; he developed Jaipur-style Khayal singing into a distinctive form
  • Main Artists – Pandit Jasraj, Pandit Maniram, Motiram Jyotiram
  • Prominent Ragas – Audav Bageshwari, Badin ki Puriya, Jayanti, Todi Raga
  • Pandit Jasraj gave the Mewati Gharana international recognition
  • This gharana is a branch of the Gwalior Gharana

KIRANA GHARANA

  • Kirana is located in Uttar Pradesh
  • Founder – Bande Ali Khan, a been (vina) player
  • The Kirana Gharana was established by Bande Ali Khan
  • This gharana is renowned for purity of swara (intonation)
  • Prominent Artists – Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Ustad Rajjab Ali, Roshanara Begum, Gangubai Hangal

Alladiya Gharana

  • FounderAlladiya Khan
  • A renowned exponent of the Gauharhari Vani and Khandar Vani of Dhrupad singing

SENIA GHARANA

  • Founder – Surat Sen (son of Tansen)
  • Main Artist – Amritsen
  • This gharana is primarily associated with Sitar playing

DAGAR GHARANA

  • Founder – Bahram Khan Dagar He was a court musician of Jaipur ruler Ram Singh
  • This gharana is famous for the Dagar Vani of Dhrupad singing
  • Note – In several sources, Gopaldas (Imam Bakhsh) is also considered the founder of this gharana


BINKAR GHARANA

  • Founder – Rajjab Ali Khan binkar
  • He was also a court musician of Maharaja Ram Singh II

RANGEELA /JODHPUR GHARANA

  • Founder – Ramzan Khan Rangile (Miyan Rangile)
  • He was a disciple of Imam Bakhsh, a singer from Jodhpur
