GS Answer WritingPhysics in everyday life | Gravitation | The human eye and Defects | Heat । Paragraph

The phenomenon of microgravity, also known as weightlessness, is responsible for the floating pictures of astronauts in space stations.

  • In a satellite orbiting the Earth, every component experiences an acceleration towards the centre of the Earth, equivalent to the Earth’s gravitational acceleration at that position.
  • As a result, everything inside the satellite is in a state of free fall, but instead of falling towards Earth, they are falling around it.
  • Because all objects inside the satellite are falling at the same rate, they appear to float in a state of weightlessness.
  • Without gravity defining the vertical direction, all directions appear the same to them, eliminating the distinction between horizontal and vertical directions.

Ans 1. Accommodation, near and far points:

The eye lens can modify its curvature to some extent with the assistance of the ciliary muscles. This alteration in curvature enables the eye lens to adjust its focal length. The ability of the eye lens to adjust its focal length is called accommodation.

  1. The near point, where objects can be seen most distinctly without strain, is about 25 cm for a young adult with normal vision.
  2. The far point, the farthest distance at which objects can be seen clearly, is considered to be infinity for a normal eye.

Thus, a normal eye can see objects clearly between 25 cm and infinity.

Ans 2.

Heating effect of electric current

The heating effect of electric current, also known as Joule heating, occurs when electrical energy is converted into heat energy due to the resistance in a circuit. This phenomenon is particularly prominent in circuits composed solely of resistive elements, where the energy from the source is entirely dissipated as heat.

Practical applications of the heating effect of electric current include:

  • Electric Heating Devices: Household appliances like irons, toasters, ovens, kettles, and heaters use Joule heating, converting electric energy to heat for tasks like cooking and heating.
  • Electric Bulbs: While the majority of the energy consumed by the filament is converted into heat, a portion is radiated as visible light, fulfilling the bulb’s purpose of illumination.
  • Fuses in Electric Circuits: When excessive current flows through a circuit, the fuse wire heats up due to Joule heating, melts, and breaks the circuit, preventing damage.

Ans3.

Lightning Thunderstorms

  • Thunderstorms are complex atmospheric phenomena characterized by the rapid upward movement of warm, moist air and the formation of cumulonimbus clouds. Strong updrafts within the cloud carry water droplets to higher altitudes, where they freeze and form ice crystals.
  • Within clouds, ice particles undergo growth, collision, fracture, and separation, leading to the acquisition of positive charges by smaller particles and negative charges by larger ones. These charged particles become separated by updrafts and gravity, establishing a dipole structure with the upper portion of the cloud positively charged and the middle negatively charged. During thunderstorm development, the ground becomes positively charged
  • cosmic and radioactive radiations ionize air, making it weakly electrically conductive. The separation of charges within the cloud and between the cloud and ground generates tremendous electrical potential, reaching millions of volts. Eventually, the electrical resistance in the air breaks down, initiating lightning flashes with currents of thousands of amperes and electric fields of about 10^5 V/m.

Ans4.

Foam insulation on the ceiling Concrete roofs tend to become excessively hot during summer days due to the material’s significant thermal conductivity. To counteract this, people often choose to apply a layer of earth or foam insulation on the ceiling. This insulation effectively prohibits heat transfer from the roof into the interior of the house, helping to maintain cooler indoor temperatures.

Paper 4 (Comprehension part) –  paragraph

The future of English in India

English is a foreign language. But it is an international language because it is spoken and written in many countries of the world. Before 1947 was the official language of the world. After the Second World War it lost its past prestige.

Importance of English

However, still English is an important language of the world. It has its importance in Science, Industry and Politics. So people learn it. The people who want to go to foreign countries for further studies in literature or in any other subject, learn it. This language is the medium through which people of the world understand one another. Thus English has the prestige of international language.

A controversy about the future of English in India

Here is a great controversy whether English should continue in free India or not. The two views give their own arguments in for and against the existence of English in India.

First view of people

First, English is the language of the Englishmen. It was brought into India by the British rulers. Now we are free. Our freedom is meaningless so far we have not our own language as national language. We no more want cheap clerks like the English masters wanted back then. Secondly, English is a difficult language to learn. Most of the time when the students go to learn English explanations, Essays, grammar and translation, they get frightened. Thirdly, a language is a medium to express oneself and be understood. When we have already a rich language like Hindi, why is English imposed on us ? Fourthly, a free country must have its own national language. Without its own national language no country in the world has ever progressed. We have the example of Japan before us. Fifthly, the Indian languages cannot have free development unless English is abolished.

Second view of people

Some people support English on the following grounds :

First, India is a developing country. It is necessary to change economic, social and political life of the people. For this purpose English is necessary to understand the books on different subjects. Secondly, our foreign policy is based on peaceful co-existence. Some common medium is necessary for the exchange of ideas. Hence, English is necessary as it is widely used in the world. Thirdly, the literature of English is full of scientific and technical development. We have to take its help. Fourthly, English is an international language.

Conclusion : We conclude that both the views carry weight. But English is a foreign language. It must go sooner or later.
