The PIN code was first introduced on 15th August, 1972 by Shriram Bhikaji who was the then Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Communications.

How are Pin Code assigned ?

The Pin code in India is 6 digits long.

  • The first digit of the PIN code indicates the region.
  • The second digit indicates the sub-region.
  • The third digit indicates the sorting district within the region.
  • The final three digits are assigned to individual post offices.
