  • Parliament passes Child Labour(Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Bill
    • Bill seeks to amend the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986.
    • Added a new category of persons called “adolescent” – between 14 and 18 years of age.
    • Prohibition of employment of adolescents in hazardous occupations as specified (mines, hazardous processes and inflammable substance).
    • Complete ban against employment of children before 14 years in any occupation, except where child helps his/her family.
    • Increased fine on employing children or employing adolescent in hazardous occupation from 20,000 to 50,000 along with, provision for Jail term of upto 2 years.
    • The Bill has a provision of creating Rehabilitation Fund for Rehabilitation of children suffering from child labour.
  • Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has setup a seven-member expert committee, headed by T V S N Prasad, Joint Secretary – MHA, for exploring the other possible alternatives to pellet guns as non-lethal weapons.
  • Myntra, (a unit of India’s e-commerce market leader Flipkart) has acquired online fashion portal Jabong.
  • Internationally, Verizon has acquired Yahoo.
    • Verizon: American broadband telecommunications company and the largest U.S. wireless communications service provider.
  • Lok Sabha has passed Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2016 for opening of six new IITs.
    • Palakkad (Kerala), Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh), Goa, Dharwar (Karnataka), Bhilai (Chhattisgarh) and Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir).
  • G-20 Finance Ministers pledge to boost global economy
    • In the two-day meeting of G-20 Finance ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting held in the Chinese city of Chengdu, it was pledge to improve global economy.
    • Group of 20 Major economies.
    • No permanent Secretariat. Chair system. Present Chair – China

  • India has contributed US 100,000 dollars to the United Nations’ Trust Fund in support of victims of sexual exploitation and abuse by peacekeepers.
  • Blow to India as arbitration tribunal rules against Antrix
  • Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) tribunal (The Hague) has ruled against Antrix Corporation, in the ongoing case with Devas Corporation over sharing of spectrum on satellites.
    • Antrix Corporation: Commercial arm of India’s space organization, ISRO.
    • Everytime that we hear ISRO sends satellite of so and so country, it is through Antrix. Antrix Company takes orders/deals etc. for sending satellite from other countries/agencies etc. and ISRO sends them.
  • 26th July: Kargil Vijay Divasjai Hind
    • The day of India’s Victory against Pakistan in Kargil War on 26th July 1999.
  • A joint expedition by India and the U.S in Indian Ocean has found highly enriched accumulations of natural gas hydrate — an icy form of the fuel — in the Bay of Bengal.
  • Gas Hydrate:
    • Natural gas hydrates are a naturally occurring, ice-like combination of natural gas and water found in oceans and polar-regions.
    • The amount of gas within the world’s gas hydrate accumulations is estimated to greatly exceed the volume of all known conventional gas resources.
    • Gas – Mostly Methane
